CHAPTER 13

AUSTIN CITY LIMITED

(without an ascot)

Estimating, their arrival time in Austin Texas proved difficult. Lief’s sister Kirsten would be waiting to let them into her home where the’d be able to stay the following evening. She and her husband Ron were on the go so it was important for Lief to give her as much advance notice as possible. The straight driving time with gas station stops accounted for was fourteen and a half-hours, but if they lost momentum and stopped for the night, Austin would be a full day away. Trying to plan around getting a hotel was a conundrum of its own. If they reserved a hotel along the way and didn’t end up tired by the time they got there, they’d want to keep driving, but wouldn’t be able to without a cancelation fee.

After much careful consideration, they decided to make the unsafe choice of driving straight through the night. Lief called Kirsten to let her know that they’d be there by morning. The plan was for them to take turns sleeping while the other drove. Their strategy would not only get them there sooner, if it went well, they’d be able to try the same trick down the road on the trip, sparing them the trouble of making additional sleeping arrangements.

Lief wasn’t close with most of his family, but he looked forward to seeing his big sister. She was two years older than Lief and was his first buddy in life. Kirsten was the other artist in the family. Even though they grew up to have much different personalities, he suspected she was a large part of why he picked his particular family. Lief’s idea that people selected which family they’d have in life was just a theory, although he had a hunch he’d find sufficient evidence to back it up sooner or later.

Lief looked over at Bigfoot who had been quiet for some time. It looked like he was experiencing white line fever himself before he snapped out of it and pulled a bottle of pills out of his pocket. He slipped one under his tongue. Lief remembered that Bigfoot would not be able to speak while the pill dissolved so he, again, took advantage of the opportunity to mess with him.

“Bigfoot, I didn’t know how to bring this up, but there have been a lot of guys around the music scene in Sonoma County that have told me that you’ve been recruiting for a boy band.”

Bigfoot mumbled then flipped Lief the bird.

“Someone told me the band name even. What was that? Oh yeah, I remember, Back Alley Boys. Yeah, that’s it. Anyways, how’s that going? I mean, I don’t mean to pry. If that’s something you’re keeping close to your chest, say nothing. I’ll totally understand.”

Bigfoot pointed to his mouth, mumbled some more, and shook his head. Five-minutes went by before the pill dissolved under his tongue, at which point he was quick to respond.

“Dude, that’s going to get old real quick.”

The highway stretched for what seemed like an eternity, while all along the way Lief was thinking of Kay.
